Improving MIMO multiplexing for mmWave static links

The millimetre wave (mmWave) frequency band is favored for deployment in the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication. The MIMO polarization technique can significantly improve the throughput of a static mmWave communication link, which features low scattering within the radio environment, highly directional antennas and relatively short distances between transmitter and receiver. This paper aims to evaluate the feasibility of deploying dual elliptical polarization (EP) multiplexing at mmWave frequency. This research uses linearly polarized (LP) antennas to perform measurements. The 2-path delay model, resulting from these measurements was used to synthesize EP channels. It was shown that the cross-polarization power ratio (XPR) of EP is significantly higher than LP, thus demonstrating that EP has higher polarization purity, which is able to mitigate inter-channel interference better than LP.
