Double-stator PM-assisted modular variable reluctance motor for EV applications

Variable reluctance machines (VRMs) have been proved to be a promising candidate for electric vehicle (EV) applications. This paper presents a novel double-stator, 12/14/12 pole, three-phase PM-assisted modular-stator variable reluctance machine for EV applications. The flux lines are plotted for the aligned and unaligned positions for a single-phase excitation. In order to prove the superiority of the proposed structure, the static torque characteristics and dynamic performance of this novel machine are compared with two other VR machines with the same dimensions and parameters. Then, the normal dynamic performance of the proposed model with single pulse control (SPC) for two operational speeds is obtained. In addition, the cogging torque curve of the machine is derived. The simulation results show that the proposed structure has a higher average torque in comparison with two other machines in the same operational speeds with a negligible cogging torque.
