A novel two-layer constant power control strategy for renewable energy system with reversible pumped hydro storage

The use of energy plays a very important role in one's life. The availability and accessibility of sufficient amount of energy accelerate individual's and nation's development. The current trends in energy consumption are neither secure nor sustainable. The lack of sufficient energy supply can also hold back the growth of people living in the developing countries. Therefore, development of clean, secure, sustainable and affordable energy sources should be our priority in this century. Both wind and solar energy are clean and sustainable but fluctuating in nature. This paper proposed a novel two-layer constant power scheme for renewable energy connected with Reverse pumped hydro storage. The renewable and reverse hydro pumped system coordination is based on application of stochastic unit commitment (SUC). Renewable energy system is controlled by the first layer renewable supervisory controller (RSC) and coordinated by second layer hydro supervisory controller (HSC). The RSC can encounter disturbances during its operation and to overcome this disturbance, a constant power control (CPC) can be applied for constant power operation. Simulation studies carried out in MATLAB on a renewable energy system consists of Solar and Wind converter.
