High power factor VSI fed induction motor drive

The recent past saw an exponential growth in the use of drive system in the industry due to the emergence of premium, cost-effective solid state power electronic devices having high switching speeds and the developments in the low-cost digital controllers. The presence of power electronics devices in the drive system induce a reduction in the Power Factor (PF), which further results in increased energy consumption and losses. Hence, to enhance the overall performance of the motor drive system, PF improvement is inevitable. In this paper, a PF correction method for an inverter fed induction motor drive system using a Cuk converter operating in Discontinuous Inductor Current Mode (DICM) is presented. The proposed system ensured high efficiency, low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and better power quality, by PF improvement and closed loop speed control using the fuzzy logic controller. The effectiveness of the proposed system is manifested by simulations, and the results are experimentally validated using a prototype hardware.
