Magnetic design for an IPT based wireless intraocular pressure regulating implant

Glaucoma is a serious ophthalmic disease threatening people all over the world. Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement and regulation has been proved to be effective in detection and treatment of glaucoma. Currently, most of the IOP monitoring implants use RF technology and therefore cannot be easily integrated with automated drug delivery systems due to the limited power transfer capability. This paper introduces an IPT based continuous IOP monitoring device combined with an automated drug delivery system. An orthogonal polarized transmitter coil design and 4 mm circular receiver coil design that will facilitate efficient power and data transfer through magnetic induction are presented together with simulation results to validate the viability of the proposed IOP monitoring/regulating ocular implant. In comparison to conventional rectangular and DD type coil designs the proposed design significantly improves the magnetic coupling as well as the spatial freedom.
