H/sub 2/ loopshaping controller design for spatially distributed systems

Considers design of feedback controllers for spatially distributed processes. A constructive design approach is developed based on two-dimensional loopshaping concepts. The closed-loop response of the system is modified through the design of an H/sub 2/ optimization problem in terms of spatial and dynamical frequencies. The conflicting objectives of disturbance attenuation and robust stability are traded off in the design of a low-order localized feedback controller. The proposed design technique is illustrated using an industrial control example taken from the papermaking industry.
