On the design of bandwidth and power efficient coded modulation

We examine continuous phase modulation (CPM) as a candidate for a constant envelope modulation that is spectrally and power efficient. We place the quadrature representations of CPM by Aulin, Rimoldi and Simon in a common context and adapt their views to a general quadrature representation of CPM. We show how Simon's representation of CPM as an encoder followed by a memoryless mapper can be applied to several representative modulations. We also consider the effect of the waveforms in the memoryless mapper along with the encoder on the spectral efficiency of the modulation.
