A novel framework for power loss minimization by modified wind driven optimization algorithm

Power loss minimization is the main task of the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem in power systems. The ORPD is modeled as a nonlinear, multimodal and mixed-variable problem. This paper investigates a novel framework optimization technique, namely wind driven optimization (WDO), to solve the ORPD problem. The WDO is a new type of nature-inspired algorithms that is based on atmospheric motion. The WDO algorithm makes use of gravitation and Coriolis forces to update the velocity equation in order to increase the randomness in fine tuning. To avoid their premature convergence, the modified WDO (MWDO) with automatically variation of the control parameters is proposed. Simulations are carried out for the IEEE 14, 30-bus system, and West Delta Network as a part of the Egyptian system. The obtained results are compared with different methods in the literature to show the capability of the proposed MWDO for power loss minimization.
