Antenna array beamforming strategies for high altitude platform and terrestrial coexistence using K-means clustering

This paper investigates suitable strategies for cell deployment from a High Altitude Platform (HAP) system to provide efficient delivery of coverage and capacity while giving protection for terrestrial users sharing a common 2.6 GHz band. Using a uniform planar array on the HAP, intelligent beamforming strategies are presented based on dynamic adaptation of a K-means clustering scheme, and compared against Random and Regular beam pointing techniques. It is shown that the K-means clustering scheme outperforms Random and Regular pointing in term of providing superior coverage and capacity with minimum interference impact on the terrestrial system.
