Single stage PV array fed synchronous reluctance motor drive

In this paper, a simple and robust solar photovoltaic array (PV) based synchronous reluctance motor (SyRM) driven water pumping system is proposed. Generally, in conventional PV array fed water pumping system, a DC-DC converter is used for maximizing the PV array and a voltage source inverter (VSI) for converting the DC power in to AC power, however in the proposed system, only a VSI is used for optimizing the PV array power as well as controlling the SyRM. Elimination of one power conversion stage i.e. DC-DC converter in the proposed single stage SPV array powered water pumping system driven by leads to cost reduction, simplicity and an increase in the efficiency. In the proposed system, a SyRM is selected for propelling the centrifugal pump because of its simple control, robustness and higher efficiency than other AC motors. Rotor currents are absent in SyRM, which makes core losses zero in the rotor. It makes the drive control intelligible in comparison to an induction motor and permanent magnet motors. Thus the use of SyRM for driving the pump and elimination of one power conditioning stage, provide a unique solution for solar powered water pumping system. The field oriented control is used for controlling the SyRM. The behaviour of the proposed topology is analysed through the simulated results of the model developed in MATLAB under steady state and transient conditions.
