Simulation and implementation of phasor measurement unit for wide area monitoring system

The world has demanded the importance of synchro phasor based Wide Area Monitoring System due to impact of blackouts in many power system. This paper deals about the modeling of PMU based Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS). The Non-Recursive DFT algorithm based PMU is simulated using LabVIEW. Power system consists of 150MW generating station, two transformers, one short transmission line and 110 MW load. Wi-Fi communication is used to establish the connection between developed PMU and the control centre. The collected data are stored in the control centre. Fault detection and classification is done by Artificial Neural Network (ANN) using received data available with control centre. The result shows that power system status can be easily monitored in real time by using the measured bus values online which improves the overall system reliability and avoids cascaded blackout during fault occurrence.
