Assessment of hybrid renewable energy with energy storage system for supplying distribution networks in Egypt

Wind turbines have a great wide application all over the world as well as in Egypt. However, the intermittent nature of wind energy, electrical energy storage system can be recognized as underpinning systems that can be employed in meeting the challenges in energy generation and load balance. Therefore, this work aims to assess and optimizing different available wind turbines with an electrical energy storage system for supplying the distribution systems. Fuel cell is suggested as electrical energy storage to construct a wind turbine-fuel cell hybrid system to ensure that loads will be supplied in continuous and reliable way. The available wind turbines are optimized from both technical and economical points of view. This model is applied numerically to estimate the optimal wind turbine that may be utilized to supply a part of Egyptian electrical distribution network. The surplus power generated from the available wind turbines is used for producing an amount of hydrogen, through water electrolysis operation, and hydrogen which stored in a tank. This hydrogen is used to obtain the most suitable fuel cell, which produces an electrical energy. This energy will be used to supply the system in the deficit times. Also, the economical design of the fuel cell is evaluated in this paper.
