Design of highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber for supercontinuum generation

Single mode Highly Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fiber (HNPCF) with slightly large core and small holes, which exhibits low losses and small effective area has been presented here. Light confinement through the solid silica core of HNPCF, surrounded by cladding made of air-holes, is based on Total Internal Reflection. Moreover, HNPCF exhibits large nonlinear coefficient. Nonlinear effects when interacting with the high power femto second pulse (soliton) launched into the HNPCF causes pulse broadening and soliton fission which generates Supercontinuum (SC) light.
