Inductive power transmission, charging and communication for implantable devices

Implant Medical Devices are powered either using implantable batteries or external power sources which use conductors punctured through the human skin. As a solution for issues like surgical battery replacement, damages to body tissues and risk of infections, there is a suggestion that wireless power transferring techniques could be used. The purpose of this paper is to find out the applicability of wireless power transmission to transfer power wirelessly through the human body tissues. A system equipped with a wireless power receiver, rechargeable battery unit and wireless communication system will be discussed in this paper. A software simulation for wireless power transmission through human body tissues, prototype hardware implementation for the proposed system and an experiment done using pig skin tissue for power transferring efficiency are presented in the paper.
