Design of asynchronous semantic preamble listening for semantic sensor network to avoid early overhearing

Overhearing is a big issue in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for consuming a major portion of energy. In WSN, receiving messages consume a major portion of energy by a sensor node and overhearing involves with receiving same messages from multiple nodes. So by avoiding overhearing, a large amount of power consumption of a node may be decreased and hence the overall lifetime of the network will be increased. This paper focuses on designing of semantic preamble listening for a semantic sensor network to avoid overhearing and proposes an ontology for the sensor nodes and the sensed events. Thus each sensor node, equipped with the ontology, has enough knowledge to receive and transmit the proper data. The data semantic is also embedded into the continuous preamble of a transmitted data packet as a short semantic preamble. When a short semantic preamble block is received by a router node, the router node checks the semantic preamble (SP) with its ontology and if SP does not match with the ontology we can say overhearing occur and it can be stopped immediately instead of receiving the whole data packet. A real experiment shows a significant improvement in energy consumption.
