Multi-objective optimization for balancing energy efficiency and channel capacity for machine type communications in LTE networks

In this paper, we investigate a tradeoff between the energy efficiency (EE) of the MTC devices (MTCDs) with multi-QoS and channel capacity (CC) of HTC devices (HTCDs) in an uplink LTE network. Three types of MTCDs are considered: emergency alerting (EA), regular monitoring (RM) and smart metering (SM). A multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) is then formulated to allocate the orthogonal bandwidth and power resources under Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Firstly, the utopia points of a summation of MTC users' EE and a sum-rate of HTC users are obtained. Then a weighted function is designed based on the demand factor (DF) of MTC, and a weighted Tchebycheff method is applied to transform the complicated MOOP into a tractable one. Finally we develop an effective iteration algorithm to find the complete set of Pareto optimal solutions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm yields a flexible tradeoff between MTC EE and HTC CC while satisfying the QoS of of both two types of devices.
