Impact of mixed charging requests of PEVs on a charging facility load and a distribution grid

Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) customers are likely to partially charge the PEV batteries at a fast charging facility, according to their charging needs to successfully complete the remaining trips and reach home, particularly since home charging is preferred over fast charging for time and cost savings. This paper incorporates such charging preferences or charging requests ranging from partial to full (mixed charging requests) of PEVs in modeling the fast charging facility load, and thereby assesses its impact on the distribution gird. A variety of battery types of PEVs and a high PEV penetration scenario are considered. A case study and simulation results considering the US National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) Data 2009 and a 33 bus distribution system are presented and discussed.
