Implementation of a highly efficient MPPT technique for a PV system using sepic converter

Photovoltaic (PV) energy can be considered to be as highly efficient energy source since it is eco-friendly, harmless and available endlessly. The use of such resources of energy is becoming highly important nowadays due to shortage of fossil fuels and in order to reduce harmful impact on environment due to use of such conventional sources. The PV system can supply the load with maximum power at a specific operating point which is known as Maximum Power Point (MPP). At this point, the system operates with highest efficiency and gives maximum power at the output. With the use of an appropriate MPPT method, harnessing maximum possible energy is possible. This paper presents an improved MPPT method which uses an adaptive scaling factor which increases the tracking speed when applied to any PV system. Also this method eliminates oscillations produced in the steady state. With a Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) type of converter, more satisfactory results are obtained as compared to a conventional boost converter. The results are obtained by executing the proposed modified beta MPPT algorithm in MATLAB.
