PJM static and dynamic model validation efforts and experiences for MOD-033

The paper presents the steady state and dynamic model validation process implemented by PJM. For steady state; the generation, load and external network in the planning model are adjusted based on the selected Energy Management System (EMS) snapshot. All 230kV and higher voltage transmission line flows are compared between the two model cases. A measure of significant differences is established. The differences are reconciled in an iterative manner that includes transmission system impedance and topology alignment using root-cause analysis. For the dynamic validation, recorded disturbance PMU data is screened. Three simulation approaches are utilized and the simulated output from the planning dynamic model is compared with the processed PMU data. Results and observations are demonstrated in the paper.
