Field trials for air-to-ground direct communication using LTE on VHF band

Authors introduced a new air-to-ground communication system for in-flight Wi-Fi services. Results of a field trial aiming to realize faster in-flight Wi-Fi services are reported. The authors built an air-to-ground direct wireless communication system between aircraft and the ground using TD-LTE on VHF band and successfully verified the communication performance and Wi-Fi service quality in the aircraft via base stations built on the ground in Miyagi prefecture in Japan.
