A single cylindrical dielectric resonator based MIMO antenna system for WiMAX applications

In this paper, a dual port cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) has been investigated and proposed for MIMO applications. The proposed antenna consists two different feedings to excite CDRA. A plus shaped CPW transmission line is used at port 1 to excite the dielectric resonator and a microstrip line (etched on bottom layer of the substrate) is used to couple the energy from port 2. During port 2 excitation, the microstrip line is acting as main feed and plus shape CPW transmission line acts as a coupling aperture The feeding techniques are oriented in such a manner that they can produce orthogonal mode in the cylindrical dielectric resonator. Improved isolation is achieved by generating two orthogonal modes, i.e., HE^y11δ and HE^x11δ in the dielectric resonator. The impedance bandwidth for port 1 and port 2 is 11.7% (3.2–3.6 GHz) and 11.4% (3.3–3.7 GHz) respectively and the isolation between the two ports exceeds −28 dB within the required band. Different diversity performance parameters such as envelop correlation coefficient (ECC), mean effective gain (MEG), diversity gain (DG), peak gain, total active reflection coefficient (TARC) and channel capacity loss (CCL) are also examined and found close to the standard values. Proposed MIMO antenna is found suitable for WiMAX band (3.3–3.6 GHz) applications.
