Real-time simulator of interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor based on FPGA devices

This paper presents a platform for real-time simulator for a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) model with non-sinusoidal back-emf. The real-time simulator is based on PFGA devices used in a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) configuration with a Digital Signal Processor (TMS320F28335) board. The DSP board implements the control system algorithm. The simulator is evaluated in two conditions for the machine operating as a generator with and without load connected to its terminals. The paper addresses the implementation issues such as HIL configuration, control system and simulation results. The simulator's responses (voltages and currents) has been compared to the results provided by a computational software. The Least Squared Error (LSE) between the responses was calculated to quantitatively compare the real-time simulator's response. The LSE demonstrates the adherence of the Real-Time Simulator response to the ones obtained from a commercial software validating the proposed real-time simulator.
