Extraction of river from satellite images

River water is used for irrigation, energy production, animal husbandry and also provides ecosystem services. The analysis of water resources plays an important role in providing solutions for ecosystem. Once the river part is segmented, surface area of the river can be computed for the study of water balancing to manage risks around the river. Hence, many techniques are used to analysis and to find water resources. This analysis can be used to avoid water becoming extinct in nature. In this paper to extract the water content from satellite images, segmentation methods like K-means clustering and region growing are used. After performing preprocessing, segmentation is performed based on color components of the different regions in satellite river images. By segmenting different regions, river part is extracted using K-means clustering and region growing methods. Here, the results are presented for Niger River delta, Volaga River and Indus River delta for the extraction of water resource. Two quality metrics such as mean square error and peak signal-to-noise ratio are used to evaluate their performance.
