On Demand System Information Delivery for 5G Wireless System

Periodic broadcast of system information (SI) in each cell in legacy LTE based wireless communication system is detrimental to energy efficiency of both network and mobile user equipment's (UEs). Broadcasting of SI periodically also leads to excessive signaling overhead and scheduling inflexibility in 5G system operating in higher frequency bands (e.g. 28 GHz) where SI needs to be transmitted using several beams to reach the coverage area of the cell. On demand SI delivery scheme is proposed for 5G wireless communication system. The proposed scheme is expected to reduce the signaling overhead and improves the network energy efficiency by minimizing periodic transmission of SI, improves the UE's energy consumption by minimizing the SI re-acquisition when UE moves from one cell to another. A numerical analysis in terms of signaling overhead and UE power consumption is performed to validate the performance of the proposed scheme.
