Estimating the conductivity of carbon fibre veil (CFV) based on shielding effectiveness

Carbon Fibre Veil (CFV) is a layer of randomly placed short carbon fibres which are placed together using a weak binder. CFV is traditionally used for non-structural purposes such as EMI shielding. However, the conductivity of CFV is low and introduces a large amount of loss for various RF applications. In this research the effective conductivity of copper plated CFV is estimated using simulation in FEKO. A novel approach is followed to estimate the conductivity based on shielding effectiveness. The porous nature of CFV and its impact on shielding effectiveness are also studied by introducing a new quantity as coverage factor. All Investigations are performed at 10 GHz.
