The relationship between student's characteristic and effective supervision: The case of industrial-based project

Literature suggests that effective supervision associated with several variables including students' characteristics. A descriptive survey study was conducted using quantitative approach, involved a subject from Malaysian Technical Institution across Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 360 students were randomly selected using stratified random sampling technique, due to the nature of the population distribution and geographical reason. The data were collected using a set of questionnaire, developed and adopted from several sources. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistic. The result; several elements of students' characteristics indicated high mean score such as self-worth, motivation and sense of responsibility; thus, students' characteristic was significantly correlated to effective supervision (r=.789). It is concluded that a successful relationship between supervisor and supervisee is correlated to students' personality characteristics, thus needs further study to confirm its contribution to an effective supervision. The outcome of this study contributes to the practice of effective supervision.
