A polarization-insensitive frequency selective radome with wideband absorption

Apolarization-insensitive frequency selective surface has been demonstrated in the article, which exhibits wide absorption at low frequency and good transmission at high frequency. The proposed structure consists of different metallic layers patterned on two dielectric substrates, where an air spacer is present in between. Simulation response depicts a broad absorption band of 3.66–9.12 GHz (covering C-band) with absorptivity above 90%, whereas the passband exhibits at 11.64 GHz (X-band). The effects of the individual layers are studied to explain the absorption/ filtering characteristic of the design. The novelty of the proposed radome exists in its four-fold symmetric structure, reduced thickness as well as simpler geometry as compared to the earlier reported radomes. Furthermore, the fabricated prototype has been experimentally verified.
