Smart street-lighting using green energy designing a novel stand-alone solar powered lighting system

In this paper, the design and implementation of a stand-alone solar energy powered LED panel lighting system is designed for lighting the streetlights. The system includes solar panels, Lead Acetate Battery, Boost Converter, microcontroller (Atmega328p), Trans-receiver module(HC-12), high power LEDs (HP-LEDs), LDRs, and LCD panel. The rising cost of electricity along with increased emphasis of integrating the renewable sources of energy in day-to-day application leads to development of such a technology. The novel approach of design of this system is significant where the intensity of streetlights can be automated as according to the natural light available in its vicinity. An intelligent battery level monitoring unit is in place to keep the level of battery in check and indicate the discharge at critical levels. The design of Boost converter and the intensity control system is performed both practically and the simulation results are obtained. Finally, simulation and practical results are verified along with theoretical output and the inference from the system is recorded. The output is obtained such that 30% of the total energy consumption is saved by employing this technology. Hence, this paper uses Solar energy to drive a stand-alone street-lighting system, whose intensity is governed by a microcontroller.
