Demand side management in residential areas using geographical information system

Smart grid is a conventional electric grid with intelligence added to it, while incorporating IT and communication infrastructure. With the emergence of new technologies, the grid is becoming even more intelligent. Visualization techniques are one of such tools which are widely used for adding intelligence to the grid. In this paper, a distributed intelligent system has been proposed, which uses GIS for displaying data from the grid on the geographical map, in real-time scenario. A prototype of the dashboard, for a residential microgrid comprising of 7600, has been created using ArcGIS and QGIS. With the implementation of communication and IT infrastructure in electric grid, the challenges pertaining to data security and privacy issues have taken plight. The authors of this paper have also proposed a method for authentication of data and authorization of users of the system.
