Performance analysis of BPSK system in the underwater acoustic channel with additive Laplacian noise

The underwater acoustic communication is characterized with multipath channel affected by the reflection signal from the surface and the bottom, and the ambient noise of the underwater environment which depend on the condition where the measurement has been conducted. This paper presents a performance analysis of BPSK system in the underwater acoustic channel environment with the additive Laplacian noise model. Performance has been evaluated with the measurement data of ambient noise from two diferent location, ie. Mangrove river and Kenjeran beach. The bit error rate (BER) performance is very close to the probability of error (Pe) of multipath channel with additive Laplacian noise model. When compared to the Gaussian noise model, this system need more 2-4 dB to achieved the same value of BER.
