Maximizing maritime safety and environmental protection with AIS: (Automatic identification system)

Increased maritime shipping activity by larger ships is elevating the risk for maritime accidents and environmental impacts. Starting in 2004, these risks are being ameliorated by Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology. Similar to airplane transponders, AIS transmits a vessel's name, type, position, size, course, destination and speed several times a minute. This information is received, processed and acted upon by nearby vessels to help prevent collisions as well received, processed and disseminated by shore based stations. This document discusses how the nonprofit Marine Exchange of Alaska is applying AIS to enhance safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sound maritime operations in Alaska.
