Design dynamic virtualized bandwidth allocation scheme to improve networking performance in cloud platform

Virtualization is necessary first step in realizing cloud computing. Most studies so far have only focused on CPU, memory and disk resources managements in the cloud environment. Hence, there is still no efficient tuning mechanism for bandwidth resource allocation. Cloud platform often encounters poorer performance in network processing that leads to lower quality of services because bandwidth resources cannot be flexibly adjusted in real time for resource provisions to cloud users due to various types of applications and increasing number of packets associated with many users. Therefore, this paper proposes a new mechanism for allocating and managing bandwidth resource, called Dynamic Virtualized Bandwidth Allocation (DVBA), which provides the SDN/OpenFlow centralized management architecture as the basis for virtualized bandwidth, and also fixes the inadequacy in static and fair bandwidth resource allocation of NETSHARE. Hence, the DVBA method that allocates bandwidth resources from the perspective of Weighted Fair Queueing, in addition to providing corresponding resources to users, and also considering loading status, quality of services, packet size and the usage of bandwidth queues. Then, we will perform simulations to compare DVBA with NETSHARE using KPIs in terms of Throughput and Average Response Time. Finally, the experimental results indicate that DVBA have higher Throughput and better Average Response Time total averaging about 8.69% and 21.90% for different users, respectively. In the future, we will perform more simulations with other KPIs such like packet loss rate and latency to prove that the proposed DVBA can dynamically adjust bandwidth allocation and enable easy tuning network resource for many more users under the cloud platform.
