Security in military/commercial communication gateways

Military organizations typically use both military unique and commercial infrastructures to carry communications. The increasing desire for "seamless communications" is driving research into the benefits that may be obtained from connecting these different infrastructures. This paper considers the unique security requirements that arise when military and commercial infrastructures are interconnected. Issues include protecting sensitive information, maintaining effective access controls, and protecting system availability. The paper discusses specific methods for addressing these issues, and examines how these methods might be implemented with current or emerging technologies.
