Identification of stenosis in coronary arteries using velocity and wall shear stress analysis

A Stenosis is caused by the cholesterol buildup in the interior walls of coronary arteries. It is also termed as Plaque or calcification in the artery. The main objective of this work is to build a computational diagnosis tool to identify the location of Stenosis even at the earlier stage by computing the CT Images acquired using CT Cardiac Angiography. The Computation begins by the process of 3D Reconstruction of coronary arteries from the acquired 2D Scan Data. The reconstructed 3D Model is subjected to the analysis of Computational Fluid Dynamic Characteristics such as Velocity and Wall Shear Stress (WSS) obtained by the simulation of blood flow in the reconstructed 3D model of an coronary artery. This method of diagnosing Stenosis through a non-invasive imaging modality called CT Cardiac Angiography followed by computer aided study will reduce the need for existing diagnosis method called Angiogram. Though an angiogram is a minimally invasive technique, it has serious complications on patients such as it may cause haemorrhage, stroke or even death while in critical condition whereas the CT Cardiac Angiography technique is found to be an added advantage for having a safe diagnosis to follow the medical status of a patient Post CABG surgery.
