Casimirs of the Goldman Lie algebra of a closed surface

We prove that the Poisson center of the symmetric algebra of the Goldman Lie algebra L of a connected closed oriented surface is generated by the trivial loop. In particular, this implies the conjecture of Chas and Sullivan stating that the center of L is one dimensional and is spanned by the trivial loop.
