Mathematical Modelling and New Theories of Learning

This article demonstrates the importance of expanding notions of learning beyond knowledge to the practices of mathematics classrooms. A three year study of students who learned through mathematical modelling is considered. This shows that a modelling approach encouraged the development of a range of important practices, in addition to knowledge, that were useful in real world situations.
