The importance of mathematics to employers

While there is an underlying assumption that Mathematics is a ''basic'' value, the author considers that employers do not realize the true value of Mathematics as a base for general employment, and management in particular. Proceeding from experience with one of the country's largest employers, this article (based on a conference address) seeks to outline the benefits mathematicians can bring to an employer, whether or not they are ever expected to ''do sums''.
