RF bonding investigation: the effects of a space environment on coatings

Coatings are commonly used in the aerospace industry for corrosion control of metals. The impedance of these coatings can reduce the effectiveness of EMI filters. This paper documents the effects of a space environment on a variety of coatings applied to electrical bonding surfaces. Nickel plating, anodizing, and chemical conversion coatings of alodine and iridite are investigated. The test fixture is designed to simulate a feed-through filter in a metal chassis. The filter insertion loss is shown as a function of both frequency and coating.
