Improving 802.11 video transport air efficiency with AL-FEC

Video transmission is one of the highest bandwidth consuming applications in current use of orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems such as IEEE802.11 networks. Modern video compression algorithms such as H.264 and H.265 are very sensitive to packet errors. Thus it is common to utilize the reliability of transport protocols such as TCP/IP to deliver the video frames. This research investigates the improved transport efficiency that can be obtained by leveraging the CPU processing capabilities of the subscribers device for executing error correction algorithms within a deadline interval. General purpose CPUs can be used for packet recovery, with complete packet recovery under multiple reception conditions. A major benefit of the reduced re-transmissions is the improved air efficiency, which can increase the number of simultaneous subscribers supported.
