Rejection events elimination at destination in WDM networks: Analytical framework and comparison

The main goal of this study is the analytical modeling of the packets rejection at destination due to the receiver collisions in WDM LANs. Especially, an efficient synchronous transmission WDMA protocol suitable for passive star topology is proposed that takes under account the collisions over the WDM channels, while it considers the receiver collisions phenomenon. In each station, a set of parallel receivers is assumed that can be tuned to any of the WDM channels for reception. In this way, each station is able to receive more than one packets per time cycle, eliminating enough the packet rejection probability at destination and increasing the system performance. An analytical framework is adopted based on a Markovian model. The performance measures of average throughput, delay, and number of busy stations are mathematically derived. Moreover, the optimum number of receivers per station in order to almost eliminate the receiver collisions is estimated. The proposed protocol performance is extensively compared with that of a similar WDMA protocol that assumes only one receiver per station. The comparative study for variable number of channels and stations gives the essential performance improvement that the proposed protocol provides.
