Ultrawideband chirp generation method based on the self-phase modulation effect

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the chirp signal generation method which significantly improves the frequency deviation parameter compared to the existing techniques. Self-phase modulation is known as an effect of nonlinear optics that causes a spectrum broadening of a high-power light impulse during its propagation over the optical fiber. In some cases, the optical pulse transforms into a chirp what can be used in radio signal processing. Math expressions are formulated to estimate the relationship between the chirp frequency deviation value and the various parameters of the optical fiber. The linearity of produce chirps has been studied. The recommendations for the chirp generator parameters to produce high linearity chirps were formulated. The results of the research may be used in radar applications, through wall imaging, medicine, radio frequency identification systems.
