Technical comparison of the domestic LEDs and CFLs available on the Australian market

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are some examples of non-linear, power electronics-based loads in the power distribution systems. They inject harmonic currents and draw reactive power because of the ballast and power electronic circuits. Although they are attractive because of their better luminous efficacy, the accumulated impact of thousands of them may affect utility's power quality. Due to an increase in the emergence of lamps from different brands and with different ratings, a detailed analysis of these lamps is required. Through this research, different domestic CFLs and LEDs currently available on the Australian market are evaluated from technical perspectives. Through laboratory measurements, they are compared from power quality aspects such as current harmonics and total harmonic distortion, and other aspects such as their fundamental and non-fundamental components of apparent power, stabilization time, deviation of actual power consumption from rated power, and power factor.
