A hybrid remote display scheme for interactive applications in band-limited environment

In Desktop as a Service (DaaS), the screen delivery is an essential part that influences the users' experience. In this paper, we propose a novel remote display scheme which makes use of both video and image encoder to improve the quality of service for interactive applications in a band-limited environment. The proposed scheme approximates the frame buffer update size and decides the encoder for every frame. The image encoder is used for frames with small changes to employ its low computation complexity. The video encoder with high compression ratio but higher complexity only activated for vastly changed frames to reduce the network transmission time thus maintains a low system response time. The experimental results show that applying our scheme improves the frame rate and decreases the response time while the CPU resources on both server and client are utilized effectively.
