Joint detection and channel estimation based on sparse representation for LTE systems

In this paper, we consider the detection problem in a communication receiver as a sparse representation and reconstruction problem. This approach allows joint channel estimation and detection as opposed to the traditional approach, first estimation of the channel using pilot symbols and then, based on channel estimates, detection of data symbols. The sparse representation approach is employed for detection of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH) signals in highly loaded multiuser scenarios with unknown user channels. Simulations show the superior performance of the proposed receiver over traditional receivers in a number of LTE scenarios.
