Calculation of radar signals interacting with scattering objects by use of transfer function

Scattering objects like wind turbines or buildings have a significant influence on radar signal propagation. In order to predict the appropriate impact of construction or modification of a building a simulation of the scenario is often helpful. Using traditional full wave simulation methods this leads to an unacceptable high amount of simulation effort due to the geometrical very large structures and typical frequencies of several GHz. In this paper a simplified calculation method is presented offering an opportunity to predict the interaction between radar signals and scattering objects in time domain while not exceeding manageable amounts of computational resources. In detail the bandwidth of the radar signal is determined by a fast Fourier transformation (FFT). In order to calculate the interaction with the environment constituted by buildings etc. its transfer function is simulated in the appropriate bandwidth. Both frequency domain functions are multiplied and transformed in time domain by the inverse FFT. Furthermore, a distinguished reduction of simulation effort is achieved using the approximating electromagnetic ray tracing simulation method Geometrical Optics and interpolating the environment's transfer function which is simulated in a significantly lower resolution compared with the radar signal in frequency domain.
