Model based MPPT algorithm for drift-free operation in PV systems under rapidly varying climatic conditions

This paper proposes a novel MPPT algorithm with a different philosophy wherein the instantaneous operating power point of the PV module is made to directly track the maximum power point. This reference maximum power is computed from the mathematical model of module using the real-time values of module parameters. Unlike other MPPT methods, this technique possesses very fast tracking characteristics, as the destination of the operating power point is known in the very first iteration itself for a particular climatic condition. In case of change in climatic conditions like irradiance level and module temperature, the maximum power point is re-estimated. This ensures a zero-drift operation even for rapidly changing climatic conditions. Additionally, this algorithm is simpler than Perturb & Observe method which is known for its simplicity and possesses fast tracking characteristics. This algorithm is presented as an alternative to the basic MPPT methods like P&O and INC from which majority of its variants have evolved. The performance of this algorithm is validated through experimental studies with real-time data acquisition.
