Optical network monitoring system using residual power of EDFA and Fiber Bragg Gratings

This paper presents an Optical Network Monitoring System using residual power of Erbium Doped Fiber amplifier (EDFA) for Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). The 1490 nm and 1550 nm signals will be transmitted from Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and will be amplified by the EDFA. The signals will be distributed to all distribution fibers by using optical power splitter. The reflection spectrum of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is used as the branch identifier for each distribution fiber. The FBG will reflect the residual power of the EDFA. The FBGs reflection spectra are observed using an Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA). The results show that with -22.5 dBm received monitoring power, this optical network monitoring system can serve up to 32 costumers. The downstream signal power for 1550 nm is -25 dBm and the power budget measured is 9 dBm.
