Analysis of a helmet-based FMCW radar for impact prediction

In this paper, we analyze the performance of a helmet-based Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar system used for impact prediction in contact sports, or other risky environment. Such a prediction tool could be used as part of a larger, helmet-based system for mitigating neurological damage caused by impacts. Mitigation strategies could leverage imminent impact information for use in an audible warning system or for dynamic preloading and control of an active helmet suspension. Our analysis includes the prediction of an impact offset parameter (and its uncertainty) in a representative player interaction scenario, and using realistic radar specifications from existing hardware.
