An active sound localization method based on mobile phone

Sound localization refers to a listener's ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound in direction and distance. The traditional method of sound localization is aimed at the problem of three-dimensional localization, which requires an array of four or more microphones. Specialized research on two-dimensional sound localization is few. Although microphone arrays are also able to solve the two-dimensional positioning problem, excessive microphones will inevitably lead to higher requirements for the system, and increase the amount of calculation. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of sound localization method, which uses one speaker and two microphones in a phone. The basic idea is the following. To estimate the incident direction of sound, the anchor phone will record a chirp sound and calculate out time difference of arrival by cross-correlation function. Then to estimate the distance between the anchor phone and target phone by using sound ranging method. And this paper creatively puts forward re-location method to solve problem that dual microphone can't identify the direction of the incident sound uniquely. Finally, it combines the direction information and distance information and achieves a good effect of sound localization.
