670 GHz FMCW radar for imaging and science applications

Even though there has been excellent progress in terahertz systems for scientific applications, mature imaging systems operating above W-band (75-100 GHz) has been lacking. This `THz radar gap' provides an opportunity for imaginative scientific, commercial, and security applications. Terahertz radars provides several benefits over either shorter or longer wave bands, such as large absolute bandwidth leading to ultra-high range resolution radars; short wavelengths enabling high cross-range resolution with small-diameter, yet still high-gain, antennas; there is appreciable penetration below about 1 THz through certain optically opaque substances such as clothing, dust, and fog; and others [1].
